Last Sunday, nine students piled into the gorgeous vaulted workroom at Birmingham haberdashery Guthrie Ghani to attend my very first Shade School. Here we are, all set up and ready to go!
I was super flattered that people came from as far afield as Devon and Brighton to share my love of lampshades and learn this traditional craft with me.
I know I’ve said it before, but the studio at Guthrie Ghani is a fabulous space to work in. Incredible natural light – which is so important for hand stitching – top of the range sewing machines and tables to work at both seated and standing.
The students brought a lovely array of fabrics from heavy large scale floral linens, to stripes, graphics and floaty cotton lawns. Check out the 30s feel Liberty floral above and the whimsical parrot fabric below. Both of which were paired with emerald trims which will look AMAZING when complete
I loved teaching this group – they were so enthusiastic and did so well! The next Shade is on August 10th at Guthrie Ghani. Places can be booked here. We’ll be confirming new Autumn dates soon. If you’d like an email to let you know when these places are released jot a mail to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
